Introduction Humans have questioned their origins since the beginning of time and in the process, come up with a variety of theories to answer the age old question, â€Å"Where do we come from?† The theory of evolution is just one of the many theories written over the centuries that attempts to answer this question; however, it holds the distinction of being the only theory accepted as scientifically true in today’s world. This paper will discuss the theory of evolution in detail; topics addressed include defining the theory of evolution and explaining how the theory has evolved over time, as well as highlighting the theory’s strengths and weaknesses and examining how effective the theory is in today’s world. I. Description of the theory The theory of evolution explains how all of the living species on Earth came to exist as they do today. Credited to Charles Darwin, the theory of evolution states that all the living species of today – humans included – evolved over time; we can see evidence of their evolution in the fossils of now-extinct species. In his book Origin of Species, published in 1859, Darwin wrote that species evolve over time through a mechanism known as â€Å"natural selection.† Basically, each species is born with a multitude of traits, some more favorable to survival than others.
